NOOM PANANG
About an hour from the heart of North District i.e., Mangan we would get into Dzongu, Mayallyang. Entering Dzongu we first get the privilige of meeting one of the important places called Noom Panang. The place with beautiful historical facts,known for religious ethics, covered by green forests, surrounded by some of the well known giant rocks and hills is inhabited by about 300 inhabitants today. This small locality of Noom Panang has a very deep and interesting history today. Noom Panang is actually two different parts of the same place. Divided by "Sumfuk Lho",Panang is in the upper region and Noom lies in the lower region. At one time the people of the region suffered the extreme shortage of water. The problem went to such an extent that people started perishing. They then started to look for an alternative, the solution was then brought about by "Sangay Duthuk Sangn Dorjee" who happend to be very wise and powerful man to save the pershing inhabitant from the problem of water shortage. He entered "Nayving Cave" to meditate and pray to god for the people which was situated in the higher about 5km from the main region. The miracle happened, from no where stream of pure water appeared from the place of meditation. This way now the little population of the place was finally saved and blessed with sufficent source of water. However, with the solution the people also started thinking how the miracle happend? They finally was able to learn that it was the all powerfull God who came in the form of "Sangay Duthuk Sangn Dorjee" and saved the people. People actually believed "Sangay Duthuk Sangn Dorjee" as God because he never came out from the "Nayving Cave" instead continued his meditation. For years and years people did not hear much about him. This way the people now had sufficent of everything. They had a very peaceful life and peaceful living. Varieties of crops were grown and sufficiently harvested in time. The situation was back to normal. People were very hard working and interected well with each others. After years and years of normalcy, unfortunate incidents started cropping up when due to lots of water from the same source started destroying the land through disastrous landslides. This problem again reached the apex.The people know no way, they started yelling"kayusa lyang rutnu naun sho" which means to say that our land would be destroyed and left again on the mercy of the disastrous natural disaster.This is how the present day of Noom gets her name from the lepcha word "Naun sho",similarly people inorder to save their land from the disasters started planting "poo"(bamboo) and the name Panang is derived from the word "poo". These people were far from losing hope and as a result of looking for the solution one of the experienced old Bongthings(priest) name Thung Anchon came up with the idea of requesting "Sangay Duthuk Sangn Dorjee",who was still meditating inside "Nayving cave".
As per the request of the Noom Panangmoo(villegers) through his powers and prayers "Sangay Duthuk Sangn Dorjee" shifted the same source of water to Noom Panang Dang(the lowest altitude of the region).This way the dangerous landslides were stopped and the situation reached to normal once again. The same stream is the source of water for the people today. So, this is how Noom Panang came to be and the people of this village remembers the history of their region and has been keeping the customs as per their history and offer prayers in the name of "Sangay Duthuk Sangn Dorjee" and the religious "Nayving cave".
